bowling update
I went bowling last Sunday right before leagues started. I started off just as terrible as I’ve been doing recently but started doing better in the end. Four games: 160, 150, 199, 202. Using the first three games as my series score that bring my overall average down to a 170.0, but at least I still have yet to bowl under a 500 series. Of those four games, two had four open frames and two had one open frame. Take a wild guess as to which is which. The 199 was a horrible disappointment. I had to get a seven count to hit 200. I threw the ball two far out and it ripped high through the 3-6 pocket and I left the 1-2-4-10 for a six count. I swear I had that same leave six times in that bowling session. I only picked it up once.
Now that I have a spreadsheet to keep track of my bowling scores, I’ve started trying to think of the best way to maintain it. Often I’ll go out and bowl more than three games. So far I’ve just been using the first three games as my series, though most the time I’ve bowled better toward the end. If I just used the three highest games in a session, my current average would be 178, I just can’t bring myself to “cheat” in that way.
other stuff
Gus (my brother) has been in town all week doing National Guard activities. He’s still an odd character. Every now and then he’ll say something that is so wrong and funny that I can hardly control myself. We took him to Maudie’s Cafe for some tex-mex. After we ordered dinner, Gus turns to me and says, “The food must be good here, because all the waitresses are fat.” That’s a genuine Gus moment.
After Gus took off to go back to the military base, I headed up to the Canary Roost (my neighborhood cocktail bar) to catch up with the peoples. After being there for a little while, the kareoke started up. Most of it was tolerable, there wasn’t a ridiculous amount of country music (w00t!) and these two white dudes were kicking out some hilarious rap covers, including Gin & Juice, O.P.P., and a Dr. Dre/Eminem song that I recognized, but couldn’t tell you the name of. The highlight of the night was definitely a girl who did “Pussy Control” by Prince. She did all the verses and then one of the two previously mentioned white dudes sang the chorus - perfectly. It was funny as hell.
South By Southwest
I’m crazy excited because next week is SXSW. Kat once again has a badge and I’m still trolling around with a wristband, so getting into some clubs might be hard, but we’ll work it out. Kat has already made a schedule, but I have some additions and changes to make. The big news this year is that I was actually smart enough to take some days off work instead of trying to make it through the entire week, going out every night and then working a full 40 hour week. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I haven’t had much chance to make my picks, but I’ve been listening to some interesting stuff.
The George W. Bush Singers - though they are from Austin, I still think we’re going to try to make it out to see these guys.
Toof - We almost saw them last year just because the name is funny. I listened to some of their song samples which were pretty good. This year they’re not playing a regular showcase, but rather one of the daytime non-SXSW showcases at Lovejoy’s on Thursday. Since I won’t be working, I should be able to roll out of bed in time to see them.
Petty Booka - Don’t Rock the Jukebox
More SXSW picks to come later.
